The Future of Infrastructure Data Storage

In the past, legacy data storage was sufficient for most organizations. They would invest in network servers, multiple hard drives, and other equipment to meet the storage needs of the operation. Today, this method of data storage is quickly becoming outdated. The costs associated with creating an internal data storage solution can be expensive and is being displaced by other cost-effective solutions like cloud-based storage.

Another change already starting to occur is a shift to solid-state drives (SSDs) and the hyper-convergence of combining servers and storage into a single piece of equipment. This type of configuration is common for cloud storage providers as they essentially “rent” a portion of the server to subscribers to meet their data storage needs.

In addition, the software storage movement has started to take off, especially with new startups and small businesses. Instead of investing money into hardware and software to set up their own internal server and data storage, they are turning to hosted virtual environments and Software-as-a-Service (SASS) solutions.

What do these changes in infrastructure data storage mean for IT professionals responsible for networking technologies, data storage, computer and server maintenance, and security? It means updating your skills by completing certification courses in information security, Cloud technologies, and CompTIA which focus on the changes occurring in data storage and networking to help prepare you and your organization for the future.
