What Student Success Means to Me

APPLICATIONS INSTRUCTOR CARRIE WILLIAMS SHARES HER EXCEL SUCCESS STORIES

My name is Carrie Williams and I am an Applications Instructor for New Horizons Computer Learning Centers of Southern California and Southern Arizona. As an Applications Instructor, I teach the Microsoft Office Suite Applications. I deliver the teaching through instructor led training in a classroom environment as well as online learning. I have been an applications Instructor for about five years and joined New Horizons six months ago. I’d like to give you an overview of what our clients and students can expect when they partner with New Horizons.

When a client sends employees to New Horizons, the ultimate goal is for the employees to learn new skill such as Excel (one of the popular applications) that they can take back to their company and immediately begin utilizing. Because Excel is software application requires that the user learn the applications language, it has earned the reputation of being difficult to master and is feared by many. However, many employers utilize this program and want their employees to master the software.

I’ve seen many students who came to my class with absolutely no knowledge of Excel and was very hesitant. However, by the end of the course, they are pleasantly surprised by how much they learn and how comfortable they have become in the Excel environment. As an Instructor, it has always been very important to me to create a classroom that is perceived as a safe environment where students are free to ask questions and to try new things without fear of embarrassment.

Following are some actual quotes from some of my students:

“I was impressed with how patient Mrs. Williams was with some of the students. She did not make me feel bad for asking questions. Thank you, Mrs. Williams!”

“Ms. Williams did an exceptional job. I really liked the way she would provide a summary of each section we went through. And she was super patient. Excel is new to me and she took the time to guide me through it in a way that was easy to understand. And she has a great grasp of teaching adult learners.”

“Carrie Williams is very knowledgeable and extremely patient with everyone's learning curve."

 “Very personable and helpful."

I believe that the above experiences are relevant to all Application Instructors at New Horizons. We all strive to make learning the Microsoft Excel Application as painless as possible.
