You Implemented Azure For Better Performance And Availability - Are You There Yet?

Microsoft Azure is part of the 3 main components of the cloud computing XaaS family consisting of IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service), PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) and SaaS (Software-as-a-Service). Azure is both IaaS and PaaS, and like all cloud computing services their overall business benefits are to help any organization "achieve their desired business outcomes". Let's take quick look at one of these business benefits of Azure - Performance.

PERFORMANCE

The speed and availability of applications to your users, whether they be employees, customers or partners, are critical to the success and competitiveness of your business. The promise of higher network, database and application performance was probably one of the top reasons you decided to implement Azure, as well as:

  • High availability and redundancy via Microsoft’s numerous global data centerscloud performance
  • The ability to monitor databases via the Azure portal
  • Built-in disaster recovery to ensure availability
  • Reduced marketing cycles by delivering features faster with more than 100 end-to-end services

Performance Post Implementation

Azure provides many features and functions to help you achieve optimum performance and availability to your users. Here are 3 examples.

Utilize Azure Advisor to Improve App Service Performance and Reliability

Azure Advisor is a personalized cloud consultant that helps you follow best practices to optimize your Azure deployments. It then recommends solutions to help improve the performance, security, and high availability of your resources  Advisor also integrates best practices recommendations for improving your App Services experience.

Improve Database Performance

Also utilizing Advisor you receive a consolidated view of recommendations for all your Azure resources. Specifically for SQL Databases, Advisor assesses the performance of your SQL Azure databases by analyzing your usage history. Next, it provides recommendations that are best suited for running the database’s typical workload.

Reduce DNS Time

Computers can only communicate using series of numbers. DNS was developed as a sort of “phone book” that translates the domain you enter in your browser into a computer readable IP.  DNS latency and performance happen to be one of the main factors to providing poor user experience. Azures Traffic Manager profile allow your IT staff to specify how quickly to switch endpoints if a given endpoint stops responding to queries thus improving your customers' experience.

If your staff is not trained on how to use Azure's performance and availability advantages, you are not realizing one of the greatest benefits of Azure.
